During the operation, a cut (incision) will be made in the skin next to the treated breast(s). Your surgeon will discuss with you the location of the incisions beforehand so you're aware of where the scars will be.
After the incision, the implant is positioned between your breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind your chest muscle. Once the implants are in place, the incision is stitched and covered with a dressing.

- excessive alcohol consumption
- obesity or after considerable weight loss
- the natural ageing process, often associated with some weight gain
- use of certain medications/drugs
- the body’s inability to lose the excess breast tissue frequently developed during puberty

Incisions are made in as inconspicuous an area as possible - usually the armpit, around the aerola (nipple area), or under the breast itself to minimize visible scarring. Working through these incisions, the doctor lifts the breast tissue and inserts the implant. It is then centered beneath the nipple, either under or above the pectoral muscle.

The most common technique for post-mastectomy reconstruction is the insertion of an implant after a balloon expander has stretched the skin over the breast enough to allow room for an implant. Through a tiny valve beneath the skin, salt-water solution is periodically injected into the expander over many weeks or months. After the skin over the breast area has stretched enough, a more permanent implant is inserted. Breast in both male and female consists of glands embedded in fat.
An alternative approach to implant reconstruction involves the creation of a new breast by surgically moving a section (flap) of skin, fat, and muscle from another part of the patient’s body – usually from the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or upper back.
